[cactus Series]
The artist, as a frail creation facing the world, is easily wounded from conflicts arising from the communities he's known. As a result of his inner collisions with the outer world, the artist feels constraint from being isolated, lonely, confused, and imperfect. His personal desires oppressed from a confusing society, the artist longs to be liberated. Yet he feels he cannot do so because of the discord between the conduct he must maintain and the implicit rules of society. So what does the artist expect from this respite called "art"?
The questions that arose from these considerations became the basis of my art work presented in this exhibit. The complete work addresses and overcomes these conflicts through cacti. This project reveals the main issues of these constricting struggles completely and in their entirety, approaching them more from a poetic perspective than is apparent. The artwork is expressed in countless circles, lines and points that mainly come together into 3D sculptures to take the shapes and forms of cacti, much like those created by a monk in training who continuously draw them with a pen.
The life of every person is a personal journey through a small universe full of discovery. Similarly, every person experiences an endless series of contemplation and change over the course of their lives. As an artist, I feel that the works I create are a way to experience a physical reflection of these ever-changing thoughts and circumstances. I try to reflect on my surroundings and use them as a viewing glass for my own introspection, before creating them into a physical form. It is my hope that this can help others consider new perspectives and inspire them in different ways.
Through this exhibit, I hope to instill in everyone who stays the strength and resilience of the cactus, and that it may give everyone the courage needed to face the trials and tribulations of our everyday lives.

[선인장 시리즈]
작가는 자신이 속한 사회에서 발생하는 갈등과 내면과의 충돌과 괴리감, 외로움, 혼란스러움, 불완전함으로부터 자유롭지 못하며 상처받기 쉬운 연약한 피조물로서 세상을 마주한다. 혼란스러운 사회 속에서 개인의 욕망을 억압당하고, 개인으로서 지켜야 하는 규정 혹은 암묵적인 룰로부터 자유롭고 싶지만 그럴 수 없는 갈등 속에서 ‘예술’ 이라는 도피처에서 무엇을 기대할 수 있는 것일까. 이러한 고민에서 시작된 질문들은 작품들에 대한 근거로 발전되었고, 전체적으로 하나의 선인장이란 형상으로 표현하며 극복 하고자 한다. 이 이야기는 보다 시적인 관점에서 여과 없이 압축적으로 고민의 단상들을 고스란히 드러낸다.
작품들은 수도사가 수련하듯 지속적으로 펜을 사용하여 무수히 많은 원과 선, 점등을 응집하여 표현되는 선인장의 형상 위주로 표현될 것이며, 이 형상들을 함께 모아 보여줌으로써 직접적으로 대면하기 꺼려했던 무언가를 당당히 스스로 마주하기를 바라고자 한다.
인생이란 ‘개인이라는 소우주를 탐험하는 여정’이듯, 인간은 누구나 자신에 대해 끊임없이 고민하고 변화하는 일련의 과정들을 거듭한다. 예술을 하는 개인의 입장에서 창작물을 만든다는 것은 이러한 과정들에 보다 밀접하게 개입하고 실험하며 반응하며 관찰하는 것으로 설명할 수 있다. 자신의 주변과 환경 속에서 영향을 받고 스스로의 내면을 바라보고, 그것을 시각적으로 표현, 관객들에게 관점의 자극과 변이를 기대하는 것이다.
관객으로 하여금 상막한 세상에서 살고 있다지만 그러한 세상 속에서 선인장과도 같이 당당히 살아가며 강한 심장을 가질 것 그리고 작가 본인 또한 그러한 의지를 표현하여 이룩하고자 한다.
